ATM bombed in Finsbury; suspects open fire on armed reaction officers

'The suspects then went on to bomb the ATM and fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash' – Mapogo operations manager.

An ATM was bombed in Drakensberg Street in Finsbury on Friday, May 12 in one of five serious incidents reported to Mapogo A Mathamaga Security in Rand West City for the period from Monday, May 8 to Sunday, May 14.

The security company’s operations manager Danie Vermeulen explained that the incident took place at 01:36.

“Suspects entered the premises on foot and proceeded to place explosives on the ATM. Employees of the premises activated the panic and upon arrival, the suspects opened fire on the Mapogo A Mathamaga armed reaction vehicle. The suspects then went on to bomb the ATM and fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash.”

Details about other incidents:

1. Thursday, May 11 at 13:12 – Housebreaking and theft in Aasvoël Street, Helikon Park

Suspects gained entry by lifting the main gate off the rail and forcing open the front security gate and door. The suspects went on to steal two flat-screen TVs, two laptops, and a jewelry case that contained jewelry.

2. Saturday, May 13 at 08:49 – Housebreaking and theft along the R47, Brandvlei

Suspects gained entry by forcing open the roller shutter at the back of the premises. The suspects went on to steal various amounts of alcohol.

3. Saturday, May 13 at 16:00 – Common theft in Park Street, Randfontein CBD

Suspects gained entry and went on to steal two outside alarm beams.

4. Saturday, May 13 at 22:59 – Housebreaking and theft in Falcon Street, Greenhills

Suspects gained entry by lifting the main gate off the rail and forcing the garage door open. The suspects then went on to steal one arc welder, one weed eater, and one electric branch trimmer.
