Butcher’s knife found during Bekkersdal school searches

The operation focused on searching the learners for dangerous weapons, dagga, cigarette and any other illicit substances not allowed in schools.

Bekkersdal police offices together with other relevant stakeholders embarked on a search and seizure operation at the TM Letlhake Secondary and Kamogelo Primary Schools.

The operation was held on March 15 in the Department of Community Safety, Department of Correctional Services, and the Department of Health among others.

Bekkersdal spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the operation was initiated in response to a significant number of drug-related and school violence incidents that have been reported in the area

“The operation focused on searching the learners for dangerous weapons, dagga, cigarettes and any other illicit substances not allowed in schools. Liquor outlets and drug dens that were within a three-kilometre radius of the schools were raided.

“The aim was also to ensure that schools are safe, compassionate, and welcoming to all within the parameters of the school,” said Lefakane.

Adding that the raid resulted in the closing of two illegal liquor outlets and 62 730ml of liquor being confiscated.

Police officers also found eight knives, one butcher’s knife, ten packets of dagga, one plastic containing loose dagga, and one chrome stone as well as items like cigarettes, rizla, hubbly bubbly charcoals, matches, and lighters.

Two people were also arrested and detained during this time and are set to appear at the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
