Operation Okae Molao yields another 89 arrests

The West Rand District Police painted the Westonaria and Bekkersdal policing areas blue during another operation Okae Molao.

Police throughout the West Rand District again tightened their grip on crime by hosting another operation Okae Molao this time in Westonaria and Bekkersdal on Thursday, February 23.

The operation yielded a total of 89 arrests and was aimed at curbing crime around the area by eliminating illegal firearms, hijacked vehicles, stolen goods, drugs, and other illegal activities.
Those involved in the operation included police on the West Rand, members of the Rand West City Traffic Police including its chief Kenny Mampondo, the Department of Correctional Services, the Department of Home Affairs, the Department of Community Safety, the Community Police Forum, Community Patrollers, Prasa, EPR security, the Rand West City MMC for Public Safety councillor Nontombi Molatlhegi, MMC for Corporate Service councillor Amanda Sityebi and Chiefwhip councillor Mkhuseli Jokazi.

Those arrested committed various crimes including assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (17), common assault (seven), housebreaking and theft (three), business burglary (one), possession of stolen property (two), possession of drugs (three), theft (eight), fraud (two), malicious damage to property (six), kidnapping (two), contravening a protection order (two), possession of suspected stolen property and damage to infrastructure (one), possession of suspected stolen property (one) and undocumented persons (26).

Other arrests included negligence driving, fraudulent vehicle license discs, possession of drugs, and dealing in liquor without a license while one arrest was also made for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm under gender-based violence. Three people were also arrested for common assault under domestic violence.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Reginald Motsamai Moshe added that 23 road traffic fines were issued to the value of R 27 000.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court soon.

Meanwhile, the West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana thanked all Law Enforcement agencies for their efforts and dedication to preventing and combating anything that may threaten the safety and security of community members by ensuring that offenders face the full might of the law.

We will continue to stamp our authority as the state to ensure that law and order are maintained and the community of West Rand District is safe,” said Kekana.
