Close to 90 arrests in just nine hours by West Rand Police

Illegal immigrants and assault accounted for 46 out of the 84 arrests made in total during a recent Okae Molao Operation held across Tarlton, Hekpoort and Magaliesburg.

Police on the West Rand made another 84 arrests, some for very serious crimes, during a recent Okae Molao operation in the district led by the District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana.

West Rand Police spokesperson Sergeant Sabina Mashego said the operation was held from 06:00 until 15:00 on Thursday, February 16, and spanned over various areas including Tarlton, Hekpoort, and Magaliesburg.

The police were joined by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Gauteng traffic police, Department of Correctional Services, MMC for Community safety, local councillors from different wards in the area as well as the community policing forum.

“The purpose of the joint operation was to prevent crime through high-density policing roadblocks on the corners of the R24 Rustenburg road, N14 Ventersdorp road, R563 and R400 on Hekpoort road.

They focused on tracing wanted suspects, looked for stolen or hijacked motor vehicles, and searched for unlicensed firearms, drugs, and people transporting prohibited goods.

A weapon was confiscated during the operation.

The 84 people were arrested for crimes which included:
• One for murder,
• One for attempted murder,
• Two for rape,
• Two for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,
• One for business robbery,
• Two for common robbery,
• Three for damage to essential infrastructure,
• One for housebreaking and theft,
• Three for fraud,
• Four for theft,
• Five for malicious damage to property,
• One for the use of a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent,
• 14 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm,
• Four for common assault under domestic violence,
• One for possession of drugs (a warrant of arrest was issued),
• One for contempt of court,
• Two for contravening a protection order,
• One for possession of dagga,
• Two for intimidation,
• One for crimen injura,
• 28 Illegal immigrants.

Mashego also said that a total of 18 traffic fines were issued to the value of R13 900 and the arrested suspects will be appearing before the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.
