Six security guards in custody for alleged murder of 22-year-old

The victim allegedly picked a stone and threw it over the fence hitting a TLB, at a construction site where the guards were stationed.

Six security guards have been denied bail at the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court after they were arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a 22-year-old man from Tambo Section in Bekkersdal.

Then incident occurred on January 27 and the six who are aged between 24 and 58 made their first court appearance on January 30.

Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the incident which occurred at approximately 8pm, left the community of Tambo shocked and baying for revenge.

“The victim was allegedly on his way home with friends from a drinking spree when he allegedly picked a stone and threw over the fence hitting a TLB [Tractor Loader Backhoe] machine that was parked at the site, breaking its window.

It is further alleged that when the security guards heard that, they allegedly gave chase, grabbed the victim, dragged him inside the yard and started assaulting him.

“During this time, the friends ran to call for help and the police were also summoned. The victim was certified dead by the EMS on the scene,” said Lefakane who added that four security officers were placed under arrest just after the incident and on January 28 and two more were also arrested at a later stage.

They were all denied bail at their first appearance and the case was postponed pending bail application.

The Bekkersdal Station Commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela has strongly condemned the senseless act of violence and declared it as irresponsible and lawlessness.

“No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. This must seize to happen and all who are found to be on the wrong side of the law will be harshly dealt with,” said Matamela.
