Operation Okae Molao yields 159 arrests: over 50 for assault

The West Rand District Police held an Operation Okae Molao this time in Bekkersdal and Westonaria making close to 160 arrests. More than 50 was for assault.

Police in the West Rand District conducted yet another Operation Okae Molao which yielded 159 arrests on Thursday, January 26.

The targeted areas this time around were Bekkersdal and Westonaria.

A breakdown of the almost 160 arrests are as follows:

Three for murder, three for armed robbery, two for common robbery, 30 for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 25 for common assault, one for business robbery, nine for housebreaking and theft, four for business burglary, four for driving while under the influence of alcohol, one for possession of unlicensed firearm, four for possession of drugs, two for possession of stolen property, 12 for theft, two for fraud, nine for malicious damage to property, two for intimidation, one for kidnapping, two for contravention of protection order, one for tampering with essential infrastructure, one for contempt of court, one for extortion, two for dealing in liquor without license, four for possession of drugs, two for possession of suspected stolen property and damage to infrastructure, one for possession of gold bearing material as well as 18 undocumented persons.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Audrey Sefara said the operation was held in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders. Some of the arrests were also carried out by detectives.

“Detectives of the West Rand District Police arrested three people for assault with the intent to cause grievous body harm, six for common assault under domestic violence, three for rape, one for common assault relating to gender-based violence alone.

“Police officers also confiscated one 9mm Pistol and magazine with four live 9mm rounds, a white Isuzu bakkie used in the commission of crime, 14 railway steel plates and railway lines, bags of gold bearing material, a bucket with gold bearing concentrate and substances suspected to be drugs,” added Sergeant Sefara.

She added that 11 road traffic fines to the value of R10 000 were issued for failing to comply with National Road Traffic Acts.

All arrested suspects will soon appear before the different magistrate courts within the district.
