ATM bombed inside Mohlakeng supermarket, cash stolen

Randfontein Police are on the hunt for at least six suspects after an ATM bombing in Mohlakeng on Wednesday.

The Randfontein Police is appealing to the public to assist with information that can lead to the successful arrest of a group of suspects believed to be involved in an ATM bombing in Mohlakeng early on Wednesday morning, January 18.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said the incident occurred at about 01:15.

“Police responded to a complaint of an armed robbery at a local community hall in Mohlakeng and upon arrival, found nothing suspicious or criminal. The officers then decided to drive around and monitor the area and it was during this time that police noticed six suspects wearing dark clothes running down the street.

“The suspects then fired a few shots as they fled the scene to different directions. Fortunately, no one was injured in the process,” said Captain Sibiya.

He added that according to witnesses at the scene, the group of suspects allegedly bombed the ATM that was situated inside the local supermarket on the corner of Tebenare and Lebusa Street.

Police recovered two detonators, explosives and four used rifle cartridges at the scene of the crime. The suspects also took an undisclosed amount of cash.
