With Christmas just around the corner and the festive season in full swing, police and other law enforcement officers throughout the country are going to have their hands full dealing with perpetrators and a string of social ills.

In line with this, Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks has issued a message in an effort to urge residents to be safe and be mindful of their surroundings at all times.

“Leave your doors locked and ensure that your windows are closed and have your alarm systems on when travelling to your holiday destinations.

“Try to inform your neighbours of your plans and leave them with your contact details as well, as this will ensure that they are able to reach you in cases of emergencies,” said Hendricks.

She added that it is also important to keep safe not only at home but in the streets as well.

“Refrain from carrying large amounts of money on you. Rather use your bank card and when you do, you must be careful not to share your pin with anyone,” said Hendricks.

Meanwhile, Hendricks also expressed concern over motorists and urged them to also be careful at all times and keep their items safe.

This is because criminals are also known to pounce on stationary vehicles and steal the items on the inside.

“Try not to leave your valuable items in your car where anyone can see them.

“Also refrain from leaving children inside the car unattended. It’s rather safe when there’s a grown up on the inside.

“Apart from this, keep your doors locked and the windows of your car half open, especially when approaching traffic lights.

“It is also not wise to give people lifts, as this might increase your chances of being hijacked and robbed.

“Try to not stop when the next person tells you that something is wrong with your car or that your tyre is flat.

“Rather drive to the nearest police or petrol station,” said Hendricks.

She also tackled the issue of children going missing around this time of the year.

“Do not to let their guard down, especially because children tend to get lost at this time of the year

“People need to know where their children are and where they go and visit at all times,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Brigadier Mashole Manamela also wish the residents of Randfontein a happy festive season and to always keep safe.

He also urged community members who will be in Randfontein for the festive season to be the ears and eyes of the police and come forward with any information that can assist the police in their fight against crime.
