Undocumented foreigners, drunk driving and assault: West Rand police make 164 arrests

Another 55 undocumented foreign nationals were among the 164 people who were nabbed in total as cops stamped their authority on the West Rand over the weekend.

Police made a total of 164 arrests across the West Rand District during the weekend with undocumented foreign nationals (55), drunk driving (15) and assault (more than 20) dominating the list.

According to West Rand District police spokesperson Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye, the successful arrests also included an Okae Molao operation which was conducted around the Muldersdrift and Krugersdorp policing precinct on Saturday night, October 8 that resulted in the arrest of 63 suspects.

Other crimes such as shoplifting, loitering, drunk and disorderly conduct, trespassing, using a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and contravening a protection order were also policed.

“This was yet another integrated effort by police and other law enforcement agencies to bring crime down to zero in the West Rand District.”

Sergeant Maswanganye said suspects landed themselves behind bars for the following crimes:

• 55 undocumented foreign nationals
• One for murder
• Six for kidnapping and assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• 14 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Two for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and domestic violence
• Five for common assault and domestic violence
• Six for common assault
• Two for common assault and malicious damage to property
• Four for malicious damage to property
• Two for house robbery
• Two for common robbery
• Three for business burglary
• Two for theft
• 15 for drunken driving
• Two for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition
• One for arson and pointing a firearm
• One for possession of dagga
• Four for possession of drugs
• One for dealing and being in possession of drugs
• Five for the possession of stolen property
• Seven for dealing in liquor without a license
• Four for possession of a stolen motor vehicle
• Two for possession of gold bearing material
• Six for contravention of precious metals

West Rand District police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana welcomed the arrests and thanked all the members for their hard work.

He also encouraged community members to come forward with information that will assist the police to help bring crime in the district to zero.

All arrested suspects are to appear in the different magistrates courts around the district.
