Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said, “It is alleged that the deceased was visiting his girlfriend at the time of the incident. They were both sitting outside when he noticed a child entering the yard. The 14-year-old child was, however, followed by an aggressive man who wanted to assault her.

When the now deceased stood up and enquired why the man was assaulting the child, the violent man took out a knife and stabbed the victim once in the chest before he fled on foot.”

The victim was then rushed to the Bekkersdal Clinic where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect had been on the run ever since.

Through the help of community members and the intensive investigations led by detective Constable Patrick Marumo the suspect was cornered and arrested at his hiding place on September 5. He had been remanded in custody ever since.

Bekkersdal Police Station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela expressed her gratitude to the community for the information that led to the arrest, and commended the investigating officer for working tirelessly and ensuring that the perpetrator was brought to book.

The long arm of the law caught up with him, therefore justice must prevail,” said Matamela.
