Over 1 500 weekend arrests in Gauteng: 170 in West Rand District

National police revealed that 170 people were arrested in the West Rand District over the weekend (1 500 + in Gauteng).

Gauteng Police increased visibility through Operation Okae Molao which is conducted simultaneously at various locations throughout the province every weekend.

This past weekend, the integrated multi-disciplinary operation saw more than 1 500 suspects being arrested for various crimes.

Major Girly Mbele, the Deputy Provincial: Management Advisory who is also acting as Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Policing, took the lead at the operation held in Mamelodi East in the Tshwane District where 10 liquor outlets were closed down for contravening the Liquor Act 59 of 2003, about 480 suspect were arrested, several vehicles with tampered engine number were impounded, and unlicensed firearms were also seized.

In the Ekurhuleni District, more than 460 suspects were arrested for crimes including possession of suspected stolen property, possession of and dealing in drugs, murder, rape and possession of unlicensed firearms, amongst others.

West Rand District Police arrested more than 170 suspects, among them those the detectives were tracing.

In the Johannesburg District, the police arrested approximately 450 suspects for different crimes, including undocumented persons.

Some of the suspects were released after paying admission of guilt fines, and the others are expected to appear in different magistrate’s courts in Gauteng.
