Operation Okae Molao targets West Rand District

Police officers from 13 different police stations in the West Rand District and other stakeholders came together to nip crime in Krugersdorp in the bud.

Police officers from 13 different police stations in the West Rand District, including Randfontein, Westonaria and Bekkersdal embarked on Operation Okae Molao in Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift.

This was on August 26 from 06:30 till 15:00 and was a partnership between various law-enforcement agencies including the Krugersdorp SAPS, District Crime Intelligence, District Detectives, West Rand Public Order Policing, West Rand K9 Unit, West Rand Flying Squad and the Hawks.

The operation was led by Women in Policing joined by their male counterparts and they focused on prioritising safety within the community of Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift.

The law-enforcement officers conducted two roadblocks and stops-and-searches looking for illegal firearms, drugs, and suspected stolen property being transported, and for stolen or hijacked motor vehicles.

The West Rand District has encountered an increase in priority crimes such as house robberies, murders, hijackings and illegal mining.

During the operation, 130 suspects were arrested for various offences:

Two for house robbery, six for armed robbery, three for common robbery, 23 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, three for common assault, nine for assault common under domestic violence, one for sexual assault, four for house breaking and theft, one for theft out of motor vehicle, two for drunken driving, three for possession of drugs, two for possession of suspected stolen property, 14 for theft, eight for malicious damage to property, two for intimidation, two for damage to essential infrastructure, one for contempt of court, one for reckless and/ or negligent driving, one for possession of unlicensed firearm, three for dealing in liquor without a licence, two for dealing in dagga, two for possession of dagga, one for possession of drugs, one for dealing in drugs, one contravention of the Pharmacy Act 53 of 1974, two for contravention of the National Gambling Act 7 of 2004, and 29 illegal immigrants.

A total of 55 traffic fines were issued to the value of R51 800. Those arrested will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court soon.

Randfontein Police Station commander Brigadier Mashole Manamela thanked all members and other law-enforcement agencies on behalf of the District commissioner Major General Fred Kekana.

We thank all those who were present for their dedication and commitment by enforcing law and order, and making sure that those who are against the law are brought to book and face the full might of the law,” said Manamela.

He also encouraged all law-enforcement agencies to refrain from any corrupt activities and urged the community to work together with the police in the fight against crime.
