Cops reveal details of Rand West City Okae Molao operation: 159 arrested

The main focus for the operation was on roadblocks, contact crimes, serious and violent crimes, firearms, liquor and secondhand goods, illegal mining as well as tracing suspects.

Operation Okae Molao yielded positive results and led to the arrest of 159 people in and around Randfontein.

The operation was conducted along the R28 near Umphakathi Mall on August 19 and was aimed at rooting out the criminal element in the area and bringing perpetrators to book.

It was a joint venture between the Rand West Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Police, Department of Community Safety, Department of Home Affairs, and police officers from the 13 police stations in the West Rand District.

The main focus for the operation was on roadblocks, contact crimes, serious and violent crimes, firearms, liquor and secondhand goods, illegal mining as well as tracing suspects.

The suspects were arrested for the following offences:

One for murder, one for attempted murder, three for armed robbery, five for common robbery, one for business robbery, one for house robbery, five for housebreaking and theft, one for business-breaking, 28 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, seven for common assault, 10 for assault common in terms of the Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998, 14 for malicious damage to property, three for theft from motor vehicle, one for use of motor vehicle without owner’s consent, five for reckless and/ or negligent driving, one for corruption, one for warrant of arrest for drunken driving, one for warrant of arrest for possession of drugs, one for dealing in drugs, one for possession of dagga, one for possession of stolen property, 16 for theft, two for fraud, three for intimidation, one for contravention of protection order, one for dealing in liquor without a licence, and 44 undocumented persons.

A total of 38 fines were issued to the value of R44 000 for various traffic-related offences.

Those arrested are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.

Law-enforcement agencies from different parts of the West Rand had their hands full during Operation Okae Molao.

Brigadier Marinda Theron on behalf of the District Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana, thanked all the men and women in blue, and other law-enforcement agencies for their dedication and commitment during the operation.

She said they were making sure community members were feeling safe and protected, and that those who act against the law are brought to book.
