Mohlakeng — Letia Radebe (59) has been supporting the underprivileged with a weekly soup kitchen since January.

Every Friday, Letia ensures that the community's less fortunate go home with full stomachs. The soup kitchen consists of a well-built container with the needed structure to make food.

Letia expressed that helping the underprivileged has always been her passion. One day when she was on her way to a tuck shop, she saw a man sitting. She asked him if he was okay and he told her he was hungry. Since then Letia has devoted her time to make sure that the needy do not go hungry.

She further explained when she started the soup kitchen she used to give out sandwiches. She quickly realised that the sandwiches were not enough. Therefore, she began making staple foods such as cooked potatoes, vegetables, pap and meat.

“I needed to know that they were able to sleep with full stomachs,” she said.

Feeding the needy is very important to Letia because as she explained, many people have to eat to drink their medication while some people in the community are diabetics.

She stated the amount of crime in the community could mostly be attributed to the needy having nothing to eat.

“If children or people go hungry, they steal to get something to eat,” she mentioned.

Letia has been supporting the community out of her pocket and she is currently appealing to the public for assistance. To continue her charity work she would need donations such as maize meal, vegetables, plates, chairs and gas.
