Sarah Titus, a blogger has shared numerous ways to stay awake so you don’t dose off while everyone else is ringing in the new year.

1. Get adequate sleep in advance
Getting plenty of sleep at least the night before the celebration can assist in revitalising the body to be able to handle staying up late.

2. Take a nap
It is advisable, if possible, to take a nap or even relax during the day for a few hours before the party starts, to get the body refreshed.

3. Avoid sugary foods and drinks that day
Although sugar provides a little bit of a boost, it is only for a short period. Avoiding sugar will prevent a giant ‘sugar crash’.

4. Coffee and caffeinated drinks
Consumption of coffee or any highly caffeinated drinks during the night of the celebration can increase energy levels and enable you to stay awake.

5. Drink cold water
Cold water keeps the body wide awake since your body will have to work harder at getting water to room temperature to be able to process and absorb it. Having a splash of cold water can also help if it’s necessary.

6. Get some fresh air
Staying awake requires fresh air. Take a quick walk around the yard even during the night – the cool fresh air will help to keep you awake.

7. Consider your surroundings
Keep things as bright as possible. Watch exciting shows that you haven’t seen before to keep your mind from getting bored and tired.

8. Pump up the volume
Listening and singing along to the music of your choice can keep you awake and in a good mood. But respect your neighbours’ rights to peace and a quiet environment.

9. Forget about time
Keep yourself so entertained that you don’t have to keep on checking the clock.
