Residents warned: ‘Criminals never take time off or go on holiday’

The security company says it is important to remain focused on your safety even now and not to become complacent as the year wraps up.

The warmer weather might put everyone in a better mood as they start dreaming of summer holidays. It is important though to remain focused on your safety even now and not to become complacent as the year wraps up, advised the head of marketing and communications at the Fidelity Services Group, Charnel Hattingh.

“We are seeing longer days and warmer weather. Understandably, everyone wants to relax and recharge now after a very busy year. You can still do that while you remember basic security tips,” Hattingh said.

One area to focus on is your security measures at home.

“Just because there is more sunlight and longer daytime hours does not mean you can now neglect arming your outdoor beams. Crime is sadly ever-present, and this means we cannot afford to drop our guard. Our advice to residents is to always arm as many elements of your home security system as you can, even when you are at home. Outside perimeter beams act as a very important early detection system for any unwanted or unauthorised access to your property.”

Hattingh also recommended testing home security systems before the festive season arrives. If you can pick up any technical problems now you will have lots of time to get it repaired before you jet off in December for that trip to your holiday destination.

The warmer weather means people will be spending more time outdoors too, going for early morning or late afternoon runs and walks.

“Now is the perfect time to get back into shape or just to enjoy the outdoors. You can do this in safety by inviting friends or family to go with you for extra support. If you are going at it alone, make sure someone knows the route you will be following and when you are supposed to return home. Be alert to your surroundings and avoid any unfamiliar areas.”

Lastly, she cautioned that criminals never take time off or go on holiday.

“This is why we need to be always alert, especially now. We can start with the easy things, such as being aware of what happens around you. You would be amazed to see how much safer you can be just by paying attention to suspicious people in your street – whether it is your hometown or that lovely beach resort you are visiting for summer.

“If you see something suspicious or something that is out of the ordinary, please speak up and contact the police or your security company. We can also be a lot safer by supporting neighbourhood watches wherever we may be, and by getting to know our neighbours so we can look out for one another.”
