Security company Fidelity ADT urged residents to remain vigilant and arm their alarms when going out of their homes, even if just to run a quick errand.
“What concerns us is that many people don’t arm their alarm systems when they leave home and we sometimes even come across properties where gates are left open,” said the head of marketing and communications at the Fidelity Services Group, Charnel Hattingh.
According to Hattingh, perimeter security is the first layer of defence, this includes your alarm.
“Like your vehicle, to make sure it runs properly it needs to be serviced regularly. The same applies to your alarm system. This must be regularly tested to ensure it is working at all times. The entire perimeter of the property should be checked regularly for weaknesses.
“These opportunistic criminals are aggressively trying to gain entry into peoples’ houses where electronics can be easily found. We urge residents to lock windows, gates, and doors and carry their panic button when at home.”
Security tips from Fidelity ADT:
• Arm your alarm even if you are at home
• Arm your alarm whenever you leave your home, even if for 30 minutes, and when you go to bed
• Test your alarm regularly to make sure it is working
• Teach your children and domestic workers how to use your alarm system
• Close windows and check all doors are locked when you leave home
• Secure your perimeter at all times
• Activate outdoor detection
• Lock all garden, leisure, and other equipment away when not in use
• Be extra vigilant when leaving and arriving home. If you notice anything or anyone suspicious, don’t turn into your driveway
• Never allow strangers onto your property, no matter what they say their business is. Ensure your domestic staff knows this rule
• Carry a remote panic at all times when you’re at home and equip your domestic staff with panic
“Report anything suspicious to the police or your security provider immediately,” Hattingh concluded.
