Local skills centre hosts empowerment event for the youth

The skills centre offers computer skills, sewing, agriculture and poultry, furniture making, cosmetics and beauty, as well as skills for the hospitality sector.

The Ndimase Development Skill Centre recently hosted a youth empowerment event at a park in Venterspost, engaging with young people in the area about skills that they could benefit from.

The event attracted a crowd of more than 80 people which included different stakeholders including Randfontein SAPS, an auxiliary social worker, local ward councillor Anele Saba and beauty queen Karabo Tororo. The event was sponsored by Calabash Hotel and Zanele Dumakude among other local stakeholders.

Speaking to the Randfontein Herald in an interview, an administrator at the centre Letlhogonolo Mokataka said this was also aimed at kickstarting Mandela Month on a high note.

“The purpose of the event was to empower the youth of Venterspost and speak to them about the list of skills that they can benefit from at the centre. This is because we have come to realise that a lot of young people are unemployed in the area. Poverty levels are also high among many households.

“This is what prompted us to have the event in this particular community with hopes that we will be able to make a difference in the long run through the skills that we offer,” said Letlhogonolo.

She added that the skills in question include computer literacy, sewing, agriculture and poultry, furniture making, cosmetics and beauty, as well as those skills one would need when working in the hospitality sector. Meanwhile, the centre is situated in Middelvlei and funded by the Department of Social Development and Lotto. It is accredited by the Sector Education and Training Authority.

The Ndimase Development Skill Centre also assist needy community members with food parcels, and home-cooked meals and has a rehab centre.
