Gov’t strengthens relations with NPO sector in Westonaria

MEC for Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment reveals their partnership with NPOs provides services to more than 3.2 million beneficiaries.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) hosted the NPO Summit to, among others, renew a relationship of trust between the government and NPOs, and also to discuss elevated priorities and funding challenges facing the sector.

The regional summits will culminate into a provincial summit following a call by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during a consultation with the NPO sector in April this year.

MEC for Social Development, Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mbali Hlophe said, “We have a long working relationship with the NPO sector, a relationship which has proved to be mutually beneficial not only for the parties involved but also for the broader residents of Gauteng. Many who are poor and vulnerable have been receiving services through this partnership, in all 10 key programmes of the department.”

She added, “This partnership is currently providing services to more than 3.2 million beneficiaries and has succeeded in creating jobs for just under 15 000 people.”

The department is currently funding the sector with an amount of over R2,3b making Gauteng Social Development the leading funder of this sector throughout the country.
