A century … have you ever thought what it would be like to live 100 years? Well, long-time former Randfontein resident (now living in Magaliesburg) Joey Miles can tell you, but chose to share all her secrets with the Herald/ News/ Record/ Northsider.
Her 100th birthday was celebrated at Golden Harvest Retirement Resort in Magaliesburg on Monday, February 20 and family came from all over, some as far as New Zealand, to share in this momentous occasion with her.
Her son Desmond Miles said it was a very special day. He added that his mother completed standard eight (Grade 10) at the age of 13 and skipped some of her years.
“They classified her as super intelligent, and she started working at the age of 14.”
At the age of 17 she met her husband William Sydney Miles and at the age of 19 asked him to marry her. She was 25 years old when she had her first child and seven more followed after that.
Joey has 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
“She spent 50 years and nine months with her husband and they lived in Randfontein until he passed.”
She travelled all over the world and visited countries like America, Australia, and New Zealand.
“At 88 years old my mother broke her leg but continued. She is called the bionic lady because at 99 she broke the same leg and she’s still marching on.”
Joey told the Herald/ News/ Record/ Northsider that if it wasn’t for her then nobody would be here today.
“I feel exactly the same and not any different at all,” Joey said about being a 100.
Her daughter Paddy Johnson said that her mother still enjoys doing Wordscapes on her tablet and crosswords. Joey also calls her children every day and video calls the children overseas and she still enjoys her glass of wine every night.
