Bakkie found loaded with alleged stolen pipes: Three arrested

The contents under the cover looked like mine property.

Two West Rand District Trio Task Team detectives, Sergeants Tebogo Goshupelwang and Etlith Dowelani were on their routine investigation duties around Tambo informal settlement in Bekkersdal on Thursday, July 21 when they came across an open bakkie with three occupants. Its load was covered with a black tarpaulin.

Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the detectives stopped the bakkie and introduced themselves to the occupants.

“They asked the driver to remove the cover so they could check the contents, and found large steel pipes that looked like mine property.”

The detectives requested documents to prove ownership but the trio couldn’t produce any. They further demanded to see the trio’s identity documents, which they also failed to do.

“The members immediately placed the suspects aged 31, 33 and 47 under arrest for possession of suspected stolen property and contravening the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.”

Lefakane said after having been processed, the suspects will make a brief appearance in the Westonaria Magistrate’s Court.

Bekkersdal police station commander Colonel Phumelele Matamela commended the members for their swift reaction and for acting with integrity in rendering a service of high standard.

“Thank you for your hard work; your dedication will not go by unnoticed,” said Matamela.
