Westonaria police spokesperson Sergeant Audrey Sefara said the incident occurred at about 19:30 on Friday, May 13 when the victim, a 38-year-old woman went to buy bread at a local shop.

“On her way back from the shop she was approached by an unknown man with a firearm. Two of his accomplices then joined him.

“They forced the victim to the bushes and all of them raped her. After the incident the first suspect that had a firearm – also on the ID kit – took the victim further into the bushes, claimed that he was in love with her and raped her again. He then accompanied her till she was close to her place of residence and then he left.

She later reported the matter to the police and was able to identify the man through an identity kit. The man pictured was identified as the first one with the firearm who approached the victim.”

Sergeant Sefara warned that the pictured suspect was said to be aggressive, between the ages of 28 and 31, Sotho-speaking, short in height, slender and dark in complexion. He was wearing black Adidas track pants and a black tracksuit top with white writing. He also had a navy bucket hat with white and red colours. He was carrying a black firearm.

Acting Westonaria Police station commander Lieutenant Joyce Tuuba condemned this kind of act and described it as cruel and immoral.

She further urged the community not to walk alone at night, especially females because they become prey to opportunistic criminals.

Anyone who might have information that could lead to the arrest of this suspect may contact the Westonaria Police on 011 278 5300/95 or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111; alternatively they may contact the investigating officer Constable Lurcia Montwedi on 074 669 1581.
