Almost 180 arrested during weekend police operations

Police held major weekend operations in the West Rand District from July 15 to 17 and arrested 179 people, most for being undocumented (42) and driving under the influence (30), followed by assault.

A total of 179 arrests were made by police in the West Rand District during weekend operations held from 06:00 on Friday, July 15 to 06:00 on Sunday July 17.

According to Captain Raymond Sebonyane, Krugersdorp Police and West Rand District Police spokesperson, these successes include arrests made during Operation Okae Molao which was conducted in the Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift precincts from 18:00 on Saturday, July 16 to 02:30 on Sunday, July 17.

“These operations are targeted at reducing crime and increasing police visibility to create a safe and secure environment for the community. All arrested suspects are expected to appear in various courts within the West Rand District soon.”

The suspects were arrested for the following crimes:

• murder (1)
• possession of a hijacked motor vehicle
• attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition (1)
• assault of a police officer and handling of a firearm under the influence of liquor (1)
• possession of ammunition (2)
• attempted business burglary (1)
• child neglect (1)
• assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (16)
• assault with the intent to cause grievous body harm under domestic violence (3)
• drunk driving (30)
• housebreaking and theft (6)
• illegal mining (9)
• common assault and malicious damage to property (4)
• assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft (2)

West Rand District Police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana applauded all law-enforcement agencies for their dedication and hard work to ensure that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.
