Unrest in Mohlakeng prevents residents to go to work

A resident of Mohlakeng spoke to the Herald about protests by angry community members. Reportedly it is about Eskom load-shedding.

Unrest in Mohlakeng has made it difficult for residents to go to work as all entrances to the township reportedly had been blocked.

The Herald spoke to Mohlakeng resident Bella Rikhotso about what she had witnessed.

She said at approximately 04:00 on Thursday July 14, people were heard shouting in the streets. They told the residents to go outside and started blocking the roads with large rocks and tyres.

They burned tyres in the streets, so we couldn’t go outside or to work because the taxis couldn’t get in or out of Mohlakeng. Most of them are waiting at the First Stop at Ralerata.”

Rikhotso added that the people allegedly were protesting because of Eskom load-shedding and the load-reduction the municipality had been implementing.

She said police were on the scene, but no one could leave Mohlakeng.

“I’m scared and I wanted to go to work, but there are still no taxis and it’s already 11:22.”

The police have been approached for comment and the Herald will give feedback once official feedback about the unrest has been received.
