118 arrests in Wild West Rand

Crimes included murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of drugs.

During weekend Okae Molao crime-prevention operations from Friday June 24 until Sunday June 26, a total of 118 arrests were made.

West Rand District Police communications officer, Sergeant Linkie Lefakane said the focus of the operations was stops-and-searches, liquor-related crimes, recovery of illegal firearms, and increased visibility in the entire district covering all three municipal areas.

Crimes that landed suspects behind bars are two for murder; 11 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm; three for common assault; eight for general theft; five for malicious damage to property; two for business burglary; nine for contravention of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996; two for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition; one for unlicensed ammunition; one for discharging a firearm in a municipal area; one for dealing in liquor without a licence; three for possession of drugs; one for possession of housebreaking implements; seven for possession of suspected stolen property and kidnapping; and 25 for driving under the influence of liquor.

Suspects in minor offences such as shoplifting and trespassing, and 26 undocumented persons were also nabbed.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear before their respective magistrate’s courts within the District soon.
