Fundraiser for man’s heart surgery a huge success

Leon Piek's heart is only functioning at 14%.

On Sunday, June 26, the Save a Life Fundraiser Event was held at The Question Pub in Krugersdorp CBD.

The aim of the event, which was sponsored by VIIP Entertainment, HRL Productions, Big Bang Party Hire, EJ’s Kitchen, and Halewood Artisanal Spirits, was to raise funds for cardiac surgery for Leon Piek whose heart is only functioning at 14% capacity. According to his wife Charmaine, doctors speculated that the condition is most likely Covid-related.

Artists Devon Jay Scott, Marli Barnes, Cherril, Carla Lee and Leonard Lang entertained the crowd from about 13:00 until 21:00 while attendees could enjoy drinks and food, and the kids could play on a jumping castle.

Charmaine, and the organiser Ruan Erasmus of VIIP Entertainment, both called the day a huge success but said they were still not close to the R1 million needed for the surgery and other medical costs such as doctors visits and medication. This in turn depends on whether Leon finds a heart donor or not. Ruan said, “What is important is that it was all about saving a life. We all came together to help. That is what I am thankful for.”.
