Security guards shot at local cemeteries: Numerous suspects sought

A balaclava-clad group is seemingly going from cemetery to cemetery shooting security guards. There were two separate incidents, one in Bekkersdal and one in Simunye, said cops.

Police in Bekkersdal are investigating two separate cases of attempted murder after security guards were shot.

According to Bekkersdal police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, more than two suspects are being sought in the cases. They allegedly were wrapped in blankets and wore balaclavas when committing the crimes.

She said the first incident happened at about 23:45 on Monday, June 13 at the Simunye cemetery.

A 26-year-old security officer was on his guard duties with his colleague when two thugs pounced on them. They allegedly opened the guard room door and fired a shot at the officers without saying anything. One guard was wounded in his stomach and the other guard escaped unharmed.”

Three days later, at about 20:15 on Youth Day, Thursday June 16 criminals struck again, this time at the Bekkersdal cemetery.

“A 30-year-old security officer was on his guard duties with his colleague when they were accosted by an unknown number of thugs. They allegedly kicked the guard room door but when it failed to open they resorted to breaking the window. They pointed a firearm at the officers and demanded their cell phones before firing at them. One security guard was wounded in his left hip.”

Sergeant Lefakane said the motive for the attacks is still unknown, however, investigations are underway.

We urge the security companies to increase their security measures in areas where they operate; however, police visibility has been increased through blue-light patrols. We are urging the community to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to the police immediately.”
