June 3 planned water shutdown: ‘Rand West City to be impacted’

Rand West City will be impacted by the planned maintenance work by Rand Water in addition to consumers in the City of Johannesburg on Friday June 3.

Rand Water confirmed that the planned maintenance work on Friday June 3 will impact consumers in the three municipalities in the West Rand District as well as in the City of Johannesburg

According to Judith Khoza, Rand Water spokesperson, the request from City Power – the electricity entity of the City of Johannesburg – to isolate and do maintenance on their electrical systems which feed Rand Water’s Eikenhof Pump Station will result in a further 200 million litres per day (200 ML/d) drop in pumping ability and inevitably, the impact of water interruptions will be felt in the local municipalities of Merafong, Mogale City, Rustenburg, Rand West City and CoJ.

The duration of the maintenance work will be 24 hours. Rand Water will start pumping water immediately upon completion of this maintenance work. However, the affected municipalities will communicate the system restoration timelines to their consumers. Rand Water would like to appeal to consumers to continue using water sparingly.”

Khoza explained further that Rand Water has scheduled the planned maintenance work at the Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant and Weltevreden to execute the following work:
1) Tie in the newly installed F46 pipeline to the existing F34 pipeline
2) Install a new non-return valve on the pump set 20 at Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant

“Rand Water has therefore agreed with City Power to align the maintenance work and undertake all (water and electricity) maintenance on the 3rd of June 2022 until the 24th of June 2022 as per Rand Water’s plan.”
