Police mark Child Protection Week

Bekkersdal police celebrated Child Protection at Kamogelo Primary School in Simunye.

Management of the Bekkersdal police celebrated Child Protection Week at Kamogelo Primary School in Simunye on Friday May 27.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the aim was to raise awareness on the rights of children and prevent them being abused.

“As the police we sought to alleviate the circle of neglect and teach them what to do when they need help,” Lefakane said.

The learners were addressed on issues such as bullying, rape and sexual offences, theft, drugs and substance abuse.

A search was further conducted involving the Grade 7 learners who were said to be problematic in school. They were encouraged to respect and love themselves and their school so that they could be able to respect their teachers,” Lefakane said.

She thanked Rand West Traffic Department, Westview Drug Rehabilitation Clinic, Gauteng Department of Health, Gauteng Department of Safety, Victim Friendly Room), Men As Safety Promoters, Women As Safety Promoters, Youth Desk, and the Community Policing Forum for collaborating with them.

“We saw the importance of doing this because school safety often becomes and obstacle to learning. Crime, violence and abuse affect all aspects of our community, and schools are not always free from fear, intimidation or victimisation,” Lefakane said

On behalf of the school management, the learner welfare coordinator Mrs Phyllis Ntsoelengoe expressed the school’s gratitude and said, “Let us unite in raising our kids to better their tomorrow”.
