Warning about hijacking hotspots, bogus cops in the West

Police in the West Rand and a security company urge motorists and truck drivers to be more cautious and not be fooled by people dressed in police or traffic uniform.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya has issued a warning concerning a disturbing increase in the number of car and truck hijackings on the N12, R28, R559 and N14.

This follows a similar caution by Randburg Police station commander, Brigadier Michelle Jones in the North.

Captain Sibiya noted the suspects are operating in groups of two, three or four and even five men including a woman.

They use either a white Toyota Hilux double cab and / or a white VW Polo and dress in traffic [police] uniforms,” he said.

It has also been noted that the hijackers use a blue light mounted on the dashboard of their vehicle. Victims who believe they are dealing with bona fide police officials are held up against their will and dropped off in different areas around Gauteng.

The West Rand Police would like to urge motorists or truck drivers to be more cautious and not be fooled by people dressed in police or traffic uniform.  Residents are also encouraged to provide any information that can lead to the successful arrest of perpetrators behind hijackings in and around the district, the members of the public are urged to call:
