Warning about hijacking hotspots, bogus cops in the West

Police in the West Rand and a security company urge motorists and truck drivers to be more cautious and not be fooled by people dressed in police or traffic uniform.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya has issued a warning concerning a disturbing increase in the number of car and truck hijackings on the N12, R28, R559 and N14.

This follows a similar caution by Randburg Police station commander, Brigadier Michelle Jones in the North.

Captain Sibiya noted the suspects are operating in groups of two, three or four and even five men including a woman.

They use either a white Toyota Hilux double cab and / or a white VW Polo and dress in traffic [police] uniforms,” he said.

It has also been noted that the hijackers use a blue light mounted on the dashboard of their vehicle. Victims who believe they are dealing with bona fide police officials are held up against their will and dropped off in different areas around Gauteng.

Specific red alert areas include:

  • Bekkersdal – R28 road and N12
  • Carletonville  – Blybank road & Randfontein road
  • Fochville – Corner N12  and R500.
  • Randfontein – R559 – R28 and  N14

Fidelity Services Group fully endorse the important warning that has been issued and reemphasise the safety tips provided:

  • Do not stop to anyone if you suspect that the person might be a bogus officer. Drive to the nearest Police station, shopping complex or any other busy area.
  • Do not drive to your residential area as you could then be followed home.
  • Do not stop at a deserted spot or area to talk on your phone or even relieve yourself.
  • Always keep your windows closed.
  • If someone tries to force you out of the road, don’t panic but just blow your horn constantly to draw attention.
  • Do not stop for hitchhikers, even if it is a female hiker with a crying baby

The West Rand Police would like to urge motorists or truck drivers to be more cautious and not be fooled by people dressed in police or traffic uniform.  Residents are also encouraged to provide any information that can lead to the successful arrest of perpetrators behind hijackings in and around the district, the members of the public are urged to call:

Crime Stop Line 0860010111 or the nearest Police station.

Alternatively one can provide confidential information via MySAPS app which can be downloaded from your device or use Crime line SMS 32211.

Wahl Bartmann CEO of Fidelity Services Group added theft out of motor vehicle and of motor vehicle parts has also been flagged and offers the following caution:

  • When at a shopping centre or out visiting always park inside their perimeter security if possible and, if not, ensure you do not leave any valuables in the vehicles if you are parked on the pavement. Rather keep these in the boot.
  • Ensure your vehicle is locked at all times
  • The growing use of a remote jamming device to block or jam the locking mechanism of motor vehicles has unfortunately become an everyday occurrence. Always check that the car is locked by testing the door. Don’t assume that by pressing the remote locking that your car is locked.
  • If you are out at night always park your car in a visible well-lit area where there is security
