Police on the West Rand are concerned about an increase in the number of hijackings involving trucks and cars.
In a statement from the West Rand District Police, its spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said the perpetrators of these crimes work in groups of two to five.

They make use of a white Toyota Hilux double cab or a VW Polo and are dressed in traffic police uniforms. They also use blue lights.
As police we urge motorists and truck drivers to be more cautious and not be fooled by people dressed in police or traffic uniform.”
The areas that have been identified as hijacking hotspots are:
• Carletonville – Blybank road and Randfontein road
• Fochville – Corner N12 and R500
• Randfontein – R559, R28 and N14
Safety tips to minimise hijackings:
• Do not stop for hitchhikers, even if it is a female with a crying baby who looks desperate and vulnerable.
• Be vigilant when you drive to your residential area.
• Do not stop at a deserted spot to talk on your phone or relieve yourself.
• Always keep your windows closed.
• If someone tries to force you off the road, do not panic, and sound your car horn constantly to draw attention.
