Residents decry deplorable conditions in Afri Village

Residents said their health is at risk as there's heaps of rubbish, and clogged and overflowing sewerage drains in the area.

Angry and frustrated residents of Afri Village decried conditions they described as deplorable, saying no one was willing to help.

Heaps of rubbish, clogged and overflowing sewerage drains put the desperate residents at the risk of disease for more than two months now.

Residents told the Herald that they’ve been send from pillar to post by Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) and are now asking for help from anyone who is willing to come to their rescue.

Lucas Ndlovu said it doesn’t look like those who are supposed to help are taking their predicament seriously. He said all they were told was that there weren’t trucks and manpower available.

We have called meetings with the ward councillor and the Municipality, but we’re not happy with the response they’ve given us; I mean for weeks now the rubbish has been piling up and we have to deal with the smell every day,” Ndlovu said.

He added that it was unfair that more that 2 000 families had to live in such conditions; not to mention that there were children who were at great risk of bacterial infections while they’re playing.

“What’s even worse is that we’ve only been allocated two skip bins for the entire community, and they hadn’t even been emptied,” Ndlovu complained.

When the Herald approached Ward 9 councillor Tewie Botha about the matter, he acknowledged the situation, but said, “Please give me a few days to draw up a formal written report”.
