Another 144 weekend arrests in West Rand District: Most for drunken driving, drug possession

Another mass weekend police operation in the West Rand District yielded 144 arrests – most for drunken driving, assault and possession of drugs.

Scores of suspects were arrested during crime-prevention operations involving 13 police stations across the West Rand District during the weekend.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson, Sergeant Tunase Elsie Majola, the 144 who were arrested during the operation were suspected of committing offences such as the following:

• Two for murder
• One for sexual assault
• Nine for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm
• Five for common assault
• Three for assault under domestic violence
• Four for armed robbery
• Two for common robbery
• Two for malicious damage to property
• One for housebreaking and theft
• One for motor vehicle theft
• Two for possession of a stolen motor vehicle
• Ten for theft
• Three for possession of stolen property
• 12 for possession of drugs
• 19 for drunken driving
• Seven for possession of dagga
• One for using dagga in public
• Two for malicious damage to property (ATM bombing)
• Four for contravening a protection order
• One for pointing a firearm
• One for fraud
• Two for possession of gold-bearing material
• Six for damaging and tampering with infrastructure
• Nine for copper cable possession

Other crimes included dealing in liquor without a licence, possession of dangerous weapon, shoplifting, illegal mining and illegal immigration, and contravening the Mine Health and Safety Act.

All arrested suspects will appear in different magistrates’ courts in the District soon.

Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police commissioner welcomed the weekend successes and thanked all members and other law-enforcement agencies for making sure that those who are in conflict with the law are brought to book.

Police on the West Rand continue to make communities feel safe and protected as it is their mandate to prevent, combat and investigate crime, maintain law and order, protect and secure the inhabitants of the District in intelligence joint operations that were conducted by members of South African Police Service and other law-enforcement agencies during the weekend,” said Sergeant Majola.
