COLUMN: A dog for the family ‘not a bad idea at all’

Local dog trainer says having the right dog in your house can do your child a world of good.

• Nadine Whittal, dog trainer writes:

Many parents go back and forth over the idea of having a dog in the house for their children. Is it a good idea, does it merely create more work for them, is it safe for the children and how would it impact everyone’s lives are very good questions. Honestly, having the right dog in your house can do your child a world of good. Dogs can offer your children a number of benefits.

Firstly, a dog can offer your child consistent companionship and positive reinforcement. The fact is, we cannot entertain our children 24 hours day. We all have to go to work, go shopping and also take some time for ourselves. During those hours we also need our children not to be lonely. Dogs always tend to be happy to see us, they are a source of constant unconditional love and as such they are incredibly good for your child’s emotional health.

Secondly, depending on age, you can give your child some of the responsibilities of caring for a dog. Things like making sure the water bowl is always full, giving the dog breakfast and supper, and cleaning up after the dog are excellent for teaching a child responsibility. There is also a real-world effect if these responsibilities are not filled, excellent for teaching your child action and consequence. Of course, you would need to keep an eye on these things as well to make sure that your dog is well cared for.

Thirdly, getting your child involved in exercising your dog and training it is an excellent way of ensuring your child has an active lifestyle. There are huge benefits to this. Learning how to train an animal improves the children’s confidence, dexterity and communication skills. It is also a great way for you and your children to let off steam.

Finally, dogs are an awesome excuse to spend time with your family. Going out for a walk together, training together, finding somewhere you can eat out with your dogs – it’s a lovely way of spending time with your children, but keep the attention on the dog and not on your child. It keeps the pressure off while still allowing you to develop a close relationship.

All in all, a dog for the family is not a bad idea at all. Just do your research before getting one. Make sure the breed suits your lifestyle and is a good family-friendly pet. If you are ever unsure, it doesn’t hurt to chat to a trainer, behaviourist or even a vet.
