Taxi stopped during search: Cops find illegal firearms and copper cable

Police arrested five occupants of a taxi for being in possession of copper cable. Cops also discovered illegal firearms – one of which was issued by the state and its serial number filled off.

Five suspects were arrested during an early Sunday morning (May 8) stop-and-search in Simunye. They were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as copper cables.

Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, Sergeant Linkie Lefakane explained that cops were busy with their normal crime-prevention duties on Panyapanya Street when they spotted a white Toyota Quantum and pulled it over.

Two police officers then conducted a search and discovered two unlicensed firearms, ammunition, copper cable and apparatus used to dig out and cut copper cable. The two loaded 9mm firearms were found hidden behind the back seat, one of which was issued by the state and its serial number filled off. Police also found two picks, two spades, a hacksaw and an axe.”

The suspects will be charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of copper cable and possession of breaking implements.

“They are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.”

Sergeant Lefakane added this was a minor victory, as people are often victims of violent crimes where firearms are used, such as being robbed, raped, hijacked and in some instances even killed.

“Removing two firearms is a breakthrough and we commend the members for acting with integrity while rendering the service to the community of Bekkersdal,” concluded Sergeant Lefakane.
