Weekend arrests in West Rand District total 139: Most for drunken driving

Police held various operations in the West Rand District on the first weekend of May. They arrested 139 people, most for drunken driving (53), followed by assault (18).

One hundred and thirty nine suspects were arrested during the multidisciplinary crime-prevention operations across the West Rand District during the weekend.

According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, those arrested during the operation were suspected of committing the following offences:

• Two for murder
• Five for rape
• One for sexual assault
• Four for malicious damage to property
• 18 for assault with intend to cause grievous bodily harm
• Nine for common assault – domestic violence
• 12 for illegal mining
• Five for theft
• Four for possession of dangerous weapon
• Two for contravention of protection order
• Two for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition
• Seven for dealing in liquor without licence
• One for possession of drugs
• One for possession of scrap metal
• 53 for driving under the influence of alcohol

Minor offences such as contempt of court, trespassing, shoplifting, and undocumented persons were also policed. All arrested suspects will appear before their respective magistrates’ courts within the District soon.

“The Acting District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Jacob Manamela thanked all members for their hard work and for selflessly serving the community without hesitation,” Lefakane said
