Another crime-awareness effort ahead of Easter

Police continued to bridge the communications gap between them and the public during another crime-awareness campaign. They also warned of driving under the influence ahead of Easter.

West Rand District Police management recently engaged with Rand West City residents to bridge the communication gap between police and the public.

According to Bekkersdal Police spokesperson Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, police educated and advised residents how they could remain safe this Easter holiday.

“The community was addressed on issues relating to drugs and substance abuse, house and business robberies, residential and business burglary, sexual offences, gender-based violence and carjacking,” Sergeant Lefakane said.

She added that one-on-one engagements were conducted, and with the support of high police visibility, two local malls were patrolled.

The community was very happy with the gesture; however, they raised their concerns and frustrations which were noted. They were further encouraged to form neighbourhood watches to protect their areas and report crime as it happens.

“The contact numbers of the police station and the Sector managers were shared, and they were advised to report crime anonymously via the My SAPS app that can be downloaded on any smartphone, or they may send an SMS to 32211.”

Acting West Rand District Police Commissioner Captain Isabel Havenga thanked all the members for always showing commitment and dedication towards their duties.

“We are approaching the Easter holidays, let us always be vigilant and watch each other’s backs. Driving under the influence is another prevalent crime – let us therefore drink responsibly and save lives,” Havenga said.
