Let’s stand up for our women – Mayor

Executive Mayor Gladys Khoza urged residents to ensure that women in society are celebrated and protected, especially those dealing with constant abuse.

Executive Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM), Councillor Gladys Khoza urged residents to ensure that women in society are celebrated and protected, especially those dealing with constant abuse.

Speaking at the International Women’s Day celebration held at Ace Ntsoelengoe Stadium in Mohlakeng in the presence of dignitaries of government, religious leaders and residents, Khoza said women were a great species, although constantly enduring abuse.

Despite their immense strength, Khoza said management of RWCLM was committed to making sure that women are protected and honoured.

Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa contains the Bill of Rights which, among others, speaks of equality, but that’s something that women don’t enjoy worldwide; but as RWCLM we want to ensure that women are safe, and men and children in communities too,” she said.

Khoza called on the community to unite against forms of crime against humanity such as abuse, discrimination and persecution of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) community, racism and tribalism.

The Mayor warned that for as long as criminals continue to rule the streets, investors will never be attracted to Rand West City, and she pleaded that people cooperate with the police to clean up the streets.

We say safety, peace and harmony should be restored. Let this gathering not be the last one. We should continue to have more, because if we’re divided, we’re not going to build a better Rand West. We should find a way to move forward,” Khoza said.
