Vehicle targeted at car wash; police and public chase down suspect

A man was held at gunpoint while washing a client's car. 'Vehicle owner owes me money', thug tells victim.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the Randfontein Taxi Rank for attempted carjacking and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

According to Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks, the arrest was made on Sutherland Street at about 13:00 on Sunday, March 6.

A man, the victim, was washing a vehicle when another man approached him for small talk. Suddenly he pointed a firearm at the victim and demanded the keys of the vehicle. The thug then jumped into the driver’s seat and told the victim that the owner of the vehicle owed him money,” said Sergeant Hendricks.

The victim screamed and when the thug fled on foot members of the community started chasing after him. He was apprehended in a joint effort by the community and police.

Randfontein Police station commander Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela expressed his gratitude towards the members of the public for reacting so swiftly and working with the police. He was delighted that another unlicensed firearm was taken off the streets.

“We now urge the community to continue this relationship by coming forward with any information about a crime taking place in their communities, or any suspicious behaviour and individual.”
