Over 165 arrests in District over the weekend: 11 for loitering in public with the intent to commit prostitution

The West Rand Police patrolled and conducted crime-combating operations over the weekend, and 168 people found themselves behind bars for various crimes.

Police again made their presence felt when they arrested 168 people during joint and intensified crime operations across the West Rand District this past weekend.

West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Reginald Motsamai Moshe said the suspects were arrested for the following:

• Three for rape
• 18 for assault
• One for domestic violence
• 34 for possession of drugs
• One for possession of stolen property
• Four for malicious damage to property
• Two for drunken driving and reckless driving
• 17 for trading liquor without a licence
• One for intimidation
• One for robbery
• One for ATM bombing
• 11 for loitering in public with the intent to commit prostitution
• One for resisting arrest
• One for failing to comply with the Liquor Act

Other crimes included contravening a protection order, intimidation, dealing in liquor without valid documents, and undocumented person. Loitering and shoplifting were also policed, and the arrested suspects will appear in various magistrates’ courts within the District.

West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana said, “I am delighted that members are committed during crime-combating operations and tracing wanted suspects, and I commend the efforts of other law-enforcement agencies in the District.

Policing is a concerted effort, and the community sharing information with the police shows the trust the community of the West Rand has and is appreciated,” Major General Kekana said.

Moshe encouraged the public to report any criminal activities immediately to the nearest police station or contact the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111, communicate via My SAPS app or to utilise the SMS line 32211 and remain anonymous.
