Randfontein crime stats: Sexual offences, murder and aggravated robberies increase, stock theft decrease

Randfontein's crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2021/2022 period: Murder, sexual offences and robbery at residential premises increase while property-related crimes including stock theft are declining.

The police recently revealed the crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2021/2022 period and as always there were the good, the bad and the ugly.

Below are the latest crime statistics for Randfontein only.

With as many as 37 crime categories mentioned in a detailed presentation by the police, Randfontein featured in the top 30 stations ranked in the country on 15 occasions.

Regarding community-reported serious crimes, Randfontein placed tenth in the country with an increase of 4,7%; contact crime (21st and an increase of 0,1%); sexual offences (30th and an increase of 31,5%); sexual assault (13th and an increase of 11,1%); kidnapping (third and an increase of 77,2%); assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm (16th despite a decrease of 13,4%); common assault (13th despite a decrease of 0,4%); trio crimes (19th and an increase of 90%); carjacking (27th and an increase of 100%); robbery at residential premises (22nd and an increase of 414%); contact-related crimes (11th and an increase of 1,1%); malicious damage to property (11th and an increase of 1,2%); property-related crimes (22nd despite a decrease of 1,4%); burglary at residential premises (14th and an increase of 4,5%); all theft not mentioned elsewhere (12th and an increase of 20,8%).

PLEASE NOTE: Information below was made available by the South African Police Service and is for the period October 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

The following crimes have shown an increase:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Murder by 46,2% (from 13 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 19)
• Sexual offences by 31,6% (from 38 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 50)
• Attempted murder by 100% (from eight in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 16)
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances by 18,7% (from 134 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 159)

SEXUAL OFFENCES:

• Rape by 24,1% (from 29 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 36)
• Sexual assault by 11,1% (from nine in in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 10)
• Attempted sexual offences (from 0 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 2)
• Contact sexual offences (from 0 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 2)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Carjacking by 100% (from 21 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 42)
• Robbery at residential premises by 414,3% (from seven in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 36)
• Truck hijacking (from 0 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 2)

CONTACT-RELATED CRIMES:

• Malicious damage to property by 1,2% (from 166 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 168)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Burglary at non-residential premises by 25% (from 36 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 45)
• Burglary at residential premises by 4,5% (from 156 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 163)

OTHER SERIOUS CRIMES:

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere by 20,8% (from 265 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 320)
• Commercial crime by 32,7% (from 49 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 65)
• Shoplifting by 15,2% (from 46 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 53)

The following crimes have shown a decrease:

CRIMES AGAINST THE PERSON:

• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm by 13,4% (from 231 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 200)
• Common assault by 0,4% (from 249 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 248)
• Common robbery by 32,7% (from 55 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 37)

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY:

• Robbery at non-residential premises by 22,7% (from 22 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 17)
• Robbery of cash-in-transit by 100% (from two in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 0)

PROPERTY-RELATED CRIMES:

• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle by 8,3% (from 60 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 55)
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle by 11,9% (from 84 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 74)
• Stock theft by 25% (from 24 in the same period 2020/ 2021 to 18)
