Living next to a gang of thieves

Mohlakeng family has been living under a reign of terror, as a group of thugs steal from them constantly

For nearly three years, a Mohlakeng family has been living in constant fear as a group of thugs continue to pillage and plunder their home for goods.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald, an angry yet terrified Siphiwe Nikelo, 33, explained that valuables such as TVs, cellphones, and home appliances had been stolen again recently by the thieves who live in an infamous hostel next door.

Nikelo also alleged that the same group of criminals are well known in the community for dealing in drugs but said they seemed to be feared by everyone.

“They are completely lawless,” he said.

Nikelo added that in 2020, he had to quit his job as a petrol attendant so that he could stand guard 24/ 7. In addition, he has to take care of his 68-year-old mother who is bedridden and vulnerable.

“I’ve reported the matter to the Randfontein Police so many times. We really don’t know what to do anymore. We really need help, anyone, please!” Nikelo cried.

He said both he and his twin brother as well as their mother are unable to sleep at night, fearing what might happen next as thugs were so brazen that they sometimes would jump over the fence to steal from them.

They don’t even bother to hide – this is if they strike during the day!” Nikelo added.

He is angry that his home has been reduced to a playground for these thieves.

“Not even the law can protect our family. My only hope is now with the community or some organisation.”

He said after he managed to identify some of the thieves he started getting death threats. He believes his family’s movements are being monitored; which is very traumatising.

Alluding to one of the incidents, Nikelo said one night the thugs jumped into his yard and forced their way into the house; luckily they were saved by their neighbours.

Despite numerous court orders and having opened several cases of theft with the police the reign of terror continues. We can’t wait until something worse happens … we need help!” Nikelo said.
