At the gateway of her dreams

Having passed matric and being accepted at university, a member of the RHS class of 2021 is excited to start a new chapter in her life which is to study and ultimately become a teacher for learners with special needs.

With her Grade 12 year now finally behind her, Mohlohonolo Selepe of Randfontein High School (RHS) is looking to the future.

When the Herald caught up with the 19-year-old she was excited to share her plans which involve studying towards a degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). Her dream career? Becoming a teacher for learners with special needs.

The youngster proudly thanked her mother, Rebecca Tsoaeli, for showing her the ropes as she already knows what to expect in this line of work.

“My mother has helped so many of the children for such a long time. I also love working with kids. If they’re being neglected at home I wish to help them to get better,” Mohlohonolo said.

Since started working with her mother and doing voluntary work at her school, she discovered a love for interacting with special-needs children, especially the deaf, to get to know what they need and how they should be treated.

“It’s going to be really interesting for me. I can sign well, which is going to make things easy for me when the time comes,” Mohlohonolo added.

Speaking about finally having completed Grade 12, she said, “It was hectic but the hard work paid off. I’d be lying if I say I didn’t enjoy it. I truly loved my school days. I’m going to miss my teacher the most whom I met fresh from primary school on my first day in Grade 8 in 2017. Now I’m finally at the gateway of my dreams.”
