Former addict finds new meaning in life, praises local rehab centre

A young former addict who has been rehabilitated now warns others currently on the wrong path that drugs will destroy their future.

A former drug addict expressed gratitude towards the Life Esidimeni Recovery Centre for helping him take back his life.

The 31-year-old Tshegofatso Mohlala who battled with a crystal meth addiction for four years said he had found a new meaning in life thanks to his six-week stay at the centre.

“My life certainly would’ve turned out worse,” he told the Herald.

Mohlala who has since even managed to get a job regrets having turned his back on those who cared for him. He now warns others currently on the wrong path that drugs will destroy their future.

Explaining how he got hooked – something that he said he’ll regret his whole life – Mohlala said it all started when he got involved with the wrong crowd.

My life suddenly went downhill.”

He explained that while his company was closed temporarily due to lockdown restrictions he was highly frustrated as he had no source of income. This caused him to heavily depend on drugs.

“During that time people around me were complaining and weren’t happy with the things I was doing. Worst of all, I was neglecting those close to me, even my kids. My life was in complete disarray,” he said.

It did not take long for Mohlala to realise that his life was a mess and he needed help as he wasn’t coping anymore. He said professional intervention was his only way out.

During his road to recovery, he not only managed to rid himself of the habit, he had an opportunity to adopt new values and principles that he lives by today.

I truly want to thank everyone who was part of the team that helped turn my life around. I want to thank the centre for restoring my life. I’ve even gone back to work and committed myself to being someone who makes a positive input in society. I’m very grateful to you, Life Esidimeni, for what you’ve done for me,” Mohlala said.
