Another 131 arrested in safer festive season Okae Malao operation

Traffic fines to the value of R51 500 were issued and 131 arrests were made during a joint safer festive season Okae Malao operation, this time in Randfontein

Another successful safer festive season Okae Molao Operation saw 131 arrests on Thursday, December 30.

Police, Gauteng traffic police, Rand West City traffic police as well as CPF patrollers joined in the operation held between 05:00 and 14:00.

According to West Rand District Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, the aim was to intensify crime prevention in the area through static roadblocks on the R28 and N14 roads, the tracing of wanted suspects as well as stolen or hijacked motor vehicles, the search for unlicensed firearms and drugs, intercepting vehicles transporting prohibited goods and inspecting liquor outlets as well as those selling second-hand goods.

During the operation, 131 arrests were made for the following crimes:

• One for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition

• One for being in possession of suspected stolen property

• Two for being in possession of dagga

• Two for being in possession of drugs

• One for dealing in liquor without a license

• One for being in possession of a dangerous weapon

• One for housebreaking and theft

• One for interfering with the police whilst performing their duties

• One for contravening the Disaster Management Act

• Three for contravening the tobacco control act and selling illicit cigarettes

• Three for contravening the Cosmetic Act

• Two for contravening the Fireworks control Act

• One for selling/ being in possession of counterfeit goods

• One for selling illicit cigarettes

• One for contravening the Pharmaceutical act/ being in possession of disinfected products

• One for attempted murder

• Six for rape

• One for hijacking

• Four for house robbery

• 23 for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm

• One for business burglary

• 18 for common assault

• One for contempt of court

• One for contravening a protection order

• One for fraud

• 12 for malicious damage to property

• One for pointing a firearm

• One for being in possession of drugs

• One for tampering with essential infrastructure

• Six for theft

• One for absconding

• 30 illegal immigrants were also policed

In addition, 53 road traffic fines to the value of R51 500 were issued and 86 275ml of liquor was confiscated.

The arrested suspects will appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.

At the morning parade, Major General Fred Kekana, the West Rand District Police Commissioner highlighted without hesitation that Covid-19 is still rife, therefore, members must be sure to wear masks properly and at all times, sanitize their hands after each and every search to protect themselves and the members of the public.

He further welcomed the successes and thanked members and law enforcement agencies for their commitment during the operation to make sure that the community are and feel safe. Additionally, he condemned any act of violence and gender-based violence (GBV).
