Fatality at mine: ‘Company saddened by tragic incident’ – CEO

Harmony miner killed in winch-related incident at the Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville.

Management of Harmony Gold Mining Company Ltd confirmed that a male employee died while on duty at its Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville on Monday, December 13.

Head of Communications Sihle Maake who issued a statement on behalf of the company said the worker died following a winch-related incident.

“Mining activities in the whole operation were stopped until the areas were declared safe; the affected area has remained closed pending an in-loco inspection into the cause of the incident. The relevant authorities have been informed, and the family of the deceased and colleagues will receive the necessary support and counselling,” the statement read.

Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp extended the company’s heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased, adding that the board, executives and management of the company were saddened by the tragic incident.

“We are doing our utmost to ensure these incidents do not occur, and continually strive to improve the safety culture throughout all our operations. Safety is a core value at Harmony and remains a priority as we seek to eliminate work-related injuries and accidents,” Steenkamp said.
