West Rand cops band together to make 196 arrests in mass weekend operation

A number of operations throughout the West Rand District were held this past weekend that led to the arrest of 196 people.

More than 190 people were arrested over the weekend as police from all over the West Rand District banded together to conduct several operations.

These included an Okae Molao operation which started on Friday, November 26 under the command of Provincial Police Commissioner General Elias Mawela and focused on the Krugersdorp and Muldersdrift areas.

A total of 19 traffic fines to the value of R11 250 were issued while police confiscated 187,11 litres of liquor, three vehicles as well as dagga and drugs.

The suspects were arrested for various crimes:
• Three for murder
• One for rape
• Two sexual assaults
• Two for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and malicious injury to property
• Two for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and intimidation
• Two for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and domestic violence
• 12 for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Three for common assault
• One for domestic violence and intimidation
• Seven for common assault and domestic violence
• One for domestic violence and contravention of a protection order

• Three for theft
• One for theft of a motor vehicle
• Two for housebreaking and theft
• 51 for drinking and driving
• One for reckless and negligent driving
• One for possession of drugs and dealing in drugs
• 21 for possession of drugs
• 13 for possession stolen property
• One for possession of gold-bearing material
• Five for possession of dagga
• Three for fraud
• One for pointing a firearm

Arrests for other crimes included contravention of a protection order, malicious damage to property, loitering, shoplifting, obstructing a police officer, contravention of the Disaster Management Act, trespassing and being an undocumented foreign national.

Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye from the West Rand District Police communications added that West Rand District Police commissioner Major General Fred Kekana welcomed the arrests and thanked all those who participated in the operations.

He further reminded members to continue to be ethical and professional when executing their duties, and always treat people with the utmost respect and humility regardless of race, gender and age, and also continue to observe Covid-19 protocols,” Sergeant Maswanganye said.
