Employees, owner tied up by ten armed robbers

Ten men – one of them armed with a rifle – entered a retail store on Main Reef Road, Randfontein, tied up employees and fled with numerous stolen items.

Several employees and a business owner were tied up during an armed robbery when ten robbers targeted a retail store on Main Reef Road during the weekend.

Randfontein Police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the incident took place at about 11:00 on Sunday, November 21. She said the ten men entered the store, one of them armed with a rifle. The business owner and four of his employees were taken to the back of the shop, tied up with cable ties and ordered to lie down.

Cellphones, plasma TVs, sound systems, laptops, fridges and microwaves were stolen. They loaded the items on a Toyota Hilux belonging to the store and left.

That same day, Sergeant Hendricks said, police received information regarding the armed robbery and investigated.

At about 23:00, five suspects were arrested after having been found with the suspected stolen property in their possession. The stolen bakkie was also recovered but without the stolen property.”

Randfontein Police urge the public to come forward with more information relating to the incident to help bring the other five robbers to book, as they may possibly help with recovering some of the stolen items.

Randfontein Police station commander Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela applauded members for their swift response, and urged the community to refrain from purchasing stolen goods and alert the police to any such incidents.

You will get on the wrong side of the law when caught with property that does not belong to you,” Manamela added.
