We Salute You campaign: ‘It’s no easy decision’ – judges

'It wasn't easy but unfortunately, we have to choose one' – judges of the We Salute You Campaign

For the judges of the 2021 We Salute You Campaign it wasn’t an easy decision to pick their winner as all 13 nominees deserved to be praised for their good deeds in the community.

Roland Williams, Michael Grobler and Maureen Mataboge, who are members of the Randfontein Publicity Association (RPA) and business owners, said they were tasked with the tough job of deciding the winner, which will be announced on Wednesday, November 17.

The nominees are Craig Harrison, Enrique Bhana, Jimmy Pappas, Kompi Mareka, Riana Zaayman, Sandra Erasmus, Candice Eno, Kim Mchugh, Monica Lancellas, Setyenzwa Makibi, Betty Hess van der Walt, Monica Kalsbeek and Ntombi Matlala.

“All nominees deserve acknowledgement because of what they’re doing in the community. What I looked at was which person was going to bring a long-lasting change in people’s lives and as a result of that, a lasting change in the environment,” Roland said.

Michael added he had the difficult task of picking the individual who did more good than others, while Maureen admitted picking the winner after a two-hour deliberation.

She also shared the same sentiments as her fellow judges by saying, “All these people touched the lives of many and gave 100%. Unfortunately, we had to choose one.”

The judges said all those nominated are playing a huge role in society and they have the power to influence many who come after them.

“We want the winner to have that effect on generations to come and adopt the values and principles of reaching out to others.

“These caring citizens should embody the spirit of community commitment. Their contributions are ongoing and that certainly deserves acknowledgement – the fact that they’re making a direct difference in people’s lives and care enough will show people that there’s far more to life than what you’re going through,” Roland added.

According to RPA publicity officer Joy Hamann, the judges had to be analytical, objective, impartial, be RPA members and business owners.
